Ariadne auf Naxos tells the story of theatre within theatre, in a symbiosis of mythological drama and commedia dell’arte: in the house of a wealthy Viennese gentleman, a staging of the opera seria Ariadne auf Naxos, commissioned from a talented young composer, is scheduled, to be followed by an Italian farce. However, there is not enough time for both performances, so the landlord orders that the opera seria and the farce be performed together.
