After the successful series of performances staged in the previous seasons – Dorilla in Tempe (2019), Farnace (2021), Griselda (2022), and Orlando furioso (2018, 2023) – La Fenice is continuing its ex-citing rediscovery of Vivaldi’s operas. Antonio Vivaldi received the commission for Il Bajazet, RV 703 from the Verona Accademia Filarmonica, for the theatre that had just been completed, on the occasion of the 1734-1735 Carnival. Although it is described in the Ryom catalogue as a ‘tragedy to music’, this work is usually defined as a ‘pasticcio’, since in it – according to the customs of that time – arias by other composers are rearranged in other arias – specially composed or borrowed from previous works – by Vivaldi himself, who instead wrote a good part of the beautiful recitatives ex novo.
